Following my last post on consulting, I thought I’d walk you through a piece of a design proposal that I recently put together for a new friend. Hopefully, this will give you a good glimpse into what these actually are! For those you of you who aren’t sure where to start on a home project, or struggle with having time to make decisions, a design proposal is really just for you!
I met a new friend in our neighborhood about a month ago. During our hour long in-home consultation, she walked me through the house and we made a list of all the things she wanted to do– things like adding a mantel to the fireplace, finishing off family room decorations, rethinking the guest room space, and adding office space to the upstairs playroom.
The project that took highest priority, however, was an upstairs bathroom renovation. The upstairs kids’ bathroom was in “working condition” but just wasn’t “working.” The vanity was awkwardly short and too small. The door to the room and the small closet door made it hard to get in and access the closet. Builder grade, original mirrors (that were hung way too high!) and vanity lights needed to be replaced. Her style in the rest of the home is beautiful. She had already chosen nice flooring for the space and just needed a little jump start in figuring out the rest of the design.
Before I walk you through the proposal, here are a few pictures of where we started.

The proposal starts by casting some simple, overall vision for the bathroom.
Then I got to work on selecting a new vanity. During the consultation, I measured the space for the vanity to ensure we’d choose the right size. You’ll see I provide links that clients can click to purchase directly. I typically like to give a few options here — varying style and price point.
Next, I chose coordinating faucets and light fixtures to go in the bathroom. (Sidebar: If at any point the client doesn’t like what I chose, they can simply let me know and I add additional options.)
Now on to the more fun part. Accessorizing 🙂 There are so many great options for shower curtains these days. Because this is a kids’ bathroom, but also houses guests when they are in town, I recommended something clean and simple. Then I added in some colored towels for both her son and daughter.
I wanted to bring in some wood tones into the bathroom to coordinate with her new flooring, so suggested looking around for some mirrors to provide this. The built-in shelf suggestion includes these wood tones as well.
Last, a few miscellaneous ideas to finish out the space…
My friend was really excited about this proposal. She ordered right from the document and the contractor got to work the following week. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together….and promise to share it with you when it’s complete!
