Continuing on from the last post on the boys’ room, I want to share a quick little post about the desks I created for them. I wanted a space in their room to draw and write, but didn’t want to buy more furniture. I wasn’t sure how much they’d actually use them or what their room would be like in a few years. I wanted something more temporary, but still usable.
That’s when I got a late-night idea to build these desks for them. I envisioned some kind of “floating” desk top with brackets underneath. I searched the internet, certain that I could find someone who had done something similar, but couldn’t find exactly what I wanted. I thought I might be able to figure this one out on my own though! 🙂
I ended up buying a deep piece of wood and staining to a tone that I liked. I found brackets about 5″ long that run 8″ under the table, so they are extremely supportive. To put everything together, I secured a 2×4 the length of the desk on the wall for the table top to rest on. Beneath that, I installed two more 2x4s down the left and the right sides. This allowed the bracket to sit flush. I painted the 2x4s the same color as the wall so that they would blend in well. Last, I fastened the brackets to the 2x4s and the desk. You can get a glimpse into all of this in the pictures below.

I grabbed two chairs that we had laying around (they “almost” match. ha!) and that was it!
The boys have been sitting at and using these desks for over a year now and they work perfectly. They were affordable, “non-furniture-commitments” that have worked great.
I wound up adding some shelves, some bulletin board, and other things to make this space fun for them. You’ll have to tune in to the next post to see it all finished!
