What is consulting?

Here’s a little more detail about design consulting!

Most clients start with scheduling a one hour, in-home consultation. During this time I typically come and walk around the home, see whatever they’d like to show me, give some ideas on things they could do, take notes, take measurements (if they want me to), pick paint colors,  etc. I’m usually walking around and feverishly scribbling notes the entire time.
574C9EAE-6A0E-4541-89CE-FBE7D255A1B6The time is really theirs and we talk about anything they’d like! For some, this is really all they need- someone to bounce ideas off of, someone to give a little bit of direction for a particular room(s), or someone to give them that little nudge to take the “next step” in starting (or finishing) a room.

During this consultation, many wind up asking if I will put together a detailed design proposal for their specific needs. This is typical if they need lots of help in lots of places (not just one room).  This can really include anything we talk about- furniture suggestions, accessory suggestions, window treatments, rugs, room layouts, paint colors, etc.F5BC72DD-B5AF-49B1-A9A3-3A3EE12150AFThe proposal usually starts with a basic “vision” for the space that incorporates what they already have going on in the room.  Screen Shot 2018-05-06 at 1.49.39 PMThen I send pictures and links to everything else they might need.  It’s set up so that they can take this plan and literally order/shop from it.   This is really designed for the person who “doesn’t know where to start,” or thinks they don’t have a good feel for what would fit in their home or a specific room.  If I’m suggesting a headboard, I might find 1-3 options to choose from (sometimes different styles and/or different price points).  If I’m suggesting curtains, I give a few links with options to choose from.  Below is an example of part of a proposal plan for a family room.

These proposals usually take around 1-3 additional hours, depending on the size of the project. Some people need help with one room, while others have lots of spaces we are working on. For those interested, at the consultation, I’m able to give an estimate of how many hours would be needed for a proposal that is specific to their home.

Here’s a glimpse into a few other proposals. This first one is for an upstairs bathroom that doubles as a guest bathroom.  Screen Shot 2018-05-06 at 2.11.11 PM

This next one is for a kids’ bathroom.  They have both boys and girls, so I was looking for gender neutral furnishings without being too “kid-ish.”  (this is the first page of a 3-page bathroom proposal)
